A Dundee United charity is to take applications for hundreds of cheap cup final tickets following an overwhelming show of support.
Requests from hard-pressed supporters will be taken by United For All (UFA) after their Just Giving appeal received more than £12,000 in just a few hours.
Organisers had only expected to raise around £2,000 when the drive was set up on Thursday morning, but that goal was quickly smashed as fans from across Scottish football and beyond got behind the effort.
UFA secretary Mike Barile said the response had gone “way beyond” what he was expecting.
“This started off because of the small number of concession tickets that were made available by the SFA,” he said.
“We felt concessions should have been made available in all parts of the ground so as many people as possible could attend and we would have the minimum number of empty seats.
“I think it’s fair that adults should pay £35 for a ticket but at least ensure enough concession tickets are available for the likes of children and OAPs.”
United season ticket holders had access to the first round of tickets meaning most of the concessions were quickly snapped up.
Mr Barile said many families had been left disappointed by the lack of availability.
“It’s heartbreaking,” he said. “What do you say to the wee boy who doesn’t understand why he can’t go to the cup final even though there are thousands of empty seats?”
The Just Giving page will close at midnight on May 9.
After that supporters can apply to UFA for a concession ticket by emailing chairman@unitedforall.co.uk or calling 01382 833166.
Mr Barile said: “When we know how much money has come in we will be in a better position.
“If we feel people really deserving of a free match ticket and travel we will endeavour to do that but I would hope the vast majority will be people attending the game who will buy a concession ticket for their child or relative.”
Supporters of Dunfermline, Raith Rovers, Celtic and Aberdeen have all chipped in for the effort as well as both Dundee United and Dundee fans and followers of cup final opponents St Johnstone.
Many have left messages praising the campaign and saying they wanted to donate to send a message to the SFA.
The online page, set up by organiser David Mulholland, was flooded with donations throughout the course of Thursday, and sat at an incredible £14,000 by noon on Friday.
