Plans to reduce the speed limit on a notorious Fife road have been approved.
At a meeting of the Levenmouth area committee, councillors heard how the C1 Leven Road, between Leven and Kennoway, was a frequent cause of accidents.
The local average for road accidents is 26 per 100 million cars. Leven Road has 62 per 100 million. Councillor John O’Brien called the road the worst he has ever seen.
The road is being resurfaced with anti-skid material but this is taking longer than expected, with 100 metres of the road still needing resurfaced.
Ian Smith, part of Fife Council’s transportation and environmental management team, noted that the wet-weather crash rate is higher than normal and hopes the new surface will help reduce the number of accidents.
“The anti-skid material is there for everyone and will protect most road users.”
But he also believes more could be done, saying: “We need to also look at other methods we can put in place. Reducing the speed (limit) was just one of the suggested methods.”
There is also a desire to increase visibility at the barrier that surrounds the worst corner of the road. Councillor Alistair Hunter said he was in 100% agreement with this decision but is concerned about the time it may take to make these changes.
He asked if anything could be done now to reduce the number of accidents.
“There is a standard perception that this is a dangerous road. Locals have had an ongoing petition to reduce the speed limit. There are families who have lost people to that road.”
