Conservative MSP Liz Smith has called on people in rural areas to be extra vigilant following an increase in cases of sheep rustling in the Mid Scotland and Fife region that she represents.
The Strathearn-based politician urges people to report anything suspicious to the police by calling 101.
She said: “Stealing animals is a reprehensible crime. Apart from the financial loss to the farmer, there are wider implications for the local communities where this is happening.
“Recent months have seen several reported incidents of sheep rustling across the Mid Scotland and Fife area and now it seems that some of the areas around Strathearn are the targets.
“I have met with local police officers and they seem clear that the crimes are being committed by ‘professionals’, who know exactly which animals they are looking for and who are very well prepared when it comes to accessing farms under cover.
“We all need to be extra vigilant. Clearly, large vehicles are involved and it is thought those who are involved also have their own dogs.”
