The start of roadworks on one of Dundee’s busiest roads passed without incident this morning.
There had been fears the work on East Dock Street would cause lengthy tailbacks for commuters during the Tuesday morning rush hour.
Engineers working for gas distribution network company SGN have begun tearing up the westbound carriageway of East Dock Street to upgrade the gas network.
However, traffic appeared to run smoothly despite the partial closure in both directions near Peep O’ Day Lane.
A contraflow has been set up in the eastbound lanes between Peep O’Day Lane and Market Street for the duration, with SGN working in the westbound lanes.
Traffic chiefs willbe hoping for a similar result during the evening rush hour.
Meanwhile, those looking to use alternative routes will find that a trickier task, with two separate set of roadworks on Arbroath Road.
There will be seven days of disruption as new road markings are painted between the Scott Fyffe roundabout and Eden Street.
A stop/go system is in place by the Scott Fyffe and will remain there for the duration.
A second set of even more disruptive roadworks will begin on the Arbroath Road on Monday July 27.
The road will be closed between the Claypotts junction and Scott Fyffe from 9.40am to 3.30pm each day for a week as repairs are made to traffic islands.
A diversion incorporating Baldovie Road, Drumgeith Road and Douglas Road is recommended to enable drivers to bypass the affected area.
The closure has received a mixed reaction from local residents.
Caroline Muir, 52, said: “I think a week is a bit excessive as the traffic around here is bad enough as it is just now.
“Would it not make sense to do it overnight , when it is quieter, and divert the larger trucks that use the road?”
Graeme Smith, 64, added: “I imagine it will cause delays as it is a very busy road, but if it is going to improve the state of the road then that’s fine.
“The last time they closed the road, residents were still given access to their driveways, so I’m hoping it will be the same this time.”
