Dundee charity Showcase the Street is planning to create a new multi-purpose indoor sports centre in Dundee.
Planning permission for the new centre, which will be created in the building adjacent to the charity’s premises at Manhattan Works on Dundonald Street, has already been granted by Dundee City Council.
The new centre would be shaped like an ice rink but will have a plastic floor suitable for a number of indoor sports, ranging from roller hockey and roller derby to handball and futsal.
There are already two 3G pitches suitable for five-a-side football in Manhattan Works.
Showcase volunteer chairman Fergus Storrier said transforming the building, which was formerly home to furniture makers JTC, will cost around £100,000 but that most of the funding for the project has already been secured.
He said: “We are looking at things being up and running by August.
“But it’s not just about a sports centre, it’s about involving the community.”
Mr Ferrier said he also believed the centre could become a home for disabled sports teams in Dundee.
“We are asking sports clubs and organisations who think they may be able to benefit from it to contact us via our website,” he said.
From working with a small group of girls in Arbroath in 2003, Showcase the Street now works with more than 3,000 young people across Scotland in community street dance classes stretching from Aberdeenshire to Fife.
Its Manhattan Works premises also house the SFA Regional team’s offices while Dundee Football Club’s academy is also part of the set-up.
