An Angus woman who was diagnosed with terminal cancer has emphasised the importance of a simple test to beat the illness.
Amanda Annat from Montrose was diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2013 and rallied to fight the disease into remission, only to be informed it had recurred in her lymphatic system last year.
The mum of two was told her condition was terminal two months ago.
But the 41-year-old has decided to bring home the importance of regular cervical screening to young women as the face of this year’s Moontrose Night Walk.
Last year’s inaugural event, a night walk around the town’s streets involving crowds of fundraisers, raised more than £38,000 for Cancer Research UK.
Amanda has been invited to cut the ribbon and participate in this year’s event on April 30.
Amanda worked as a care officer with Dorward House and a team of colleagues are joining friends and family on the dozen-strong Team Annat, which will help her around the course.
“I was first diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2013 and we thought we’d gotten rid of it,” she said.
“But the cancer in the lymph nodes, which you have all over your body, came back and I was diagnosed again in September.
“A couple of months ago I was told it was terminal and there wasn’t much to be done other than keep me comfortable.
“If I can reach out to one young woman about cervical cancer and how crucial it is to have regular screening, it would be worthwhile.
“Some people think that it’s embarrassing but I’d ask what’s worse between that and dying I have two teenagers that I will leave behind.”
The event is organised by Alana Loudon, who complimented Amanda on her strength.
She said: “Amanda is bringing a human touch to the walk.
“It’s on her bucket list of things to do and we’re delighted to be supporting her and all 12 members of Team Annat.”
The walk begins at 10pm from the Park Hotel, with options to complete five or 10 kilometres.
Booking a place costs £10 and participants will receive a T-shirt.
