Work on Fife’s biggest council housing project in two decades is under way.
A total of 161 homes are being built at Overton Road in Kirkcaldy.
The mix of flats and family houses for social and mid-market rent could welcome its first tenants as early as spring next year.
Fife Council leader Councillor David Ross said: “I’m extremely proud of the overall progress being made to deliver on our commitment of 2,700 new affordable homes by 2017.
“We don’t stop there though. A strong social and economic business case for more affordable homes for Fife still remains.
“Work is now under way to decide how best to extend this programme to allow us to continue building even more affordable homes beyond the target set for 2017.”
Robertson Partnership Homes were awarded the construction contract.
Councillor Judy Hamilton, the council’s executive spokeswoman for housing, said new homes at Overton would be allocated to existing tenants awaiting transfer, for example families in overcrowded accommodation.
“The private housing development originally planned for this area was stalled a number of years ago and I’m very pleased that the council was able to purchase this disused land and work with Robertson Partnership Homes to bring forward what will be a lovely mixed development for the new tenants as well as the people who already own homes here.
“One of the big successes of the programme so far is the chain of lets created by allocating these new homes to our existing tenants, where possible.”
