A mum thought she was going to die as she was trapped by a fire that ripped through a block of Dundee flats.
Casey Toner lives in the same Kinghorne Road block as pensioner George Gallagher, who remains in a critical condition following the blaze on Sunday morning.
In a stroke of good fortune, Casey revealed her young son Kenzie was not at home when fire broke out, but said the experience has left her shaken.
She said: “Thanks for all the nice messages regarding the fire. I am OK.
“For all the people asking about Kenzie, he was not at home at the time, it was just me.
“I’ve never been so scared. Trapped in a burning building. I thought I was going to die.
“I’m fine, just trying to get my head around things. It’s been a hard day.”
Mr Gallagher continues to fight for his life in hospital.
One resident, who asked not to be named, said: “It sounds like he was lying there for a while before someone called the fire brigade.”
There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the blaze but police are refusing to rule anything out at this stage.
A police spokeswoman said: “The man is still in a critical condition in hospital and the joint investigation with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service is still ongoing.”
The “brutal” fire, which began shortly before 8.45 on Sunday morning, caused residents to flee in terror.
Speaking after escaping through his bedroom window, Brandon Halley, who lives near Mr Gallagher’s flat, said: “I live two doors down and was in bed when I smelled smoke.
“At first I thought someone was burning incense. But when my dad went out to check, the whole close was full of smoke.
“I had to climb out of my bedroom window and so did a couple of other people.”
Police were alerted to the incident by chance after two officers drove along Kinghorne Road.
