‘Granny porn’ care home nurse is struck off the register

A nurse who admitted looking at “granny porn” while on duty has been struck off after failing to write an essay for the industry watchdog.

David Campbell was originally suspended by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) last September after acknowledging he had accessed the material. At the time he was working as deputy manager of Ashlea House Nursing and Residential Home in Callander.

The disciplinary panel recommended that Campbell write a reflective piece detailing how he accepted responsibility for his actions and what he has learned from his mistakes.

However, a review committee heard that since the original order had been made Campbell had not provided the essay and had refused to further engage with the NMC.

The panel felt that without any evidence Campbell had tried to remedy his behaviour they were unable to keep him on the register.

They said: “Mr Campbell has not provided this panel with the recommended reflective piece and the panel has no information regarding his current circumstances. Having ruled out all lesser sanctions the panel had no alternative other than to impose a striking-off order.

“In satisfying itself that such a sanction was appropriate the panel considered the continued lack of engagement by Mr Campbell with the NMC fitness to practise process.

“Mr Campbell had been given a clear opportunity by the substantive panel to provide evidence of reflection and insight into his failings and he has not done so.

“The panel was also mindful of the public interest including the maintenance of public confidence in the profession and upholding proper standards of conduct and behaviour.

“The misconduct in this case has brought the profession into disrepute and, in addition, the panel has identified there to be a risk of repetition of the behaviour which led to Mr Campbell’s suspension.”

The NMC heard that Campbell’s colleagues discovered he had viewed several web pages containing pornographic content on January 16 2013 after spotting the suspect web addresses on the home computer’s internet history.

A check of the rotas revealed Campbell was the nurse on duty at the time, and the only member of staff who needed access to the computer.

Campbell had visited an adult website and viewed several sections, including one entitled “grannies”, around half an hour before his shift was due to end.

He was suspended on April 6 2013 and subsequently resigned in June.

Ashlea House cares for up to 25 residents, some of whom have physical and learning disabilities.
