Dundee defender Matt Lockwood admits he was delighted to see Scottish football given a shake-up in the summer as the club aim for a swift return to the top flight.
Like many, the Englishman felt the one up one down set-up between the old SPL and First Division was in danger of going stale but reckons the introduction of expanded play-offs has breathed new life into the format.
A top-four finish would give Dundee a chance of making it back to the big time at the first attempt since relegation in 2012-13, although it is safe to say everyone at Dens Park will have their sights set on the automatic promotion that comes with the title.
However, Lockwood insists the changes have made it more exciting for fans of teams in both of Scotland’s top two divisions.
“Before when it was only one team up and down, the season could be over in March, but at least this way with the new play-offs it keeps it more interesting,” he said.
“It’s really interesting in the Championship with so many teams fighting for a place in the top four, and obviously that’s where we want to be.
“But it keeps it interesting in the top flight as well. When we were cut adrift at the bottom in the SPL, none of the teams above us had to worry.
“I know we gave it a little run at the end but, even so, with two teams with a chance of going down everyone’s still fighting in the top division to avoid finishing second bottom.
“It’s definitely made it a lot more interesting for the neutral and gives people a lot more to play for.”
Meanwhile, there has been no change in chief executive Scot Gardiner’s position at Dens.
He has been linked with a move to Rangers but Dark Blues chairman Bill Colvin said: “Like anyone would, I imagine, if a bigger company comes along and is offering more money, it is something he would consider.
“Again, though, I will say that we are happy for him to stay and work with John Nelms and others at the club.”
