Falkirk v Dundee: Keepers’ rivalry fuelled by course

Kyle Letheren: rates McGovern highly.
Kyle Letheren: rates McGovern highly.

Kyle Letheren has revealed there was plenty of food for thought when he was joined on a diet and nutrition course by fellow keeper Michael McGovern.

The pair will be in opposite goals when table-topping Dundee travel to face Championship promotion rivals Falkirk.

Letheren admitted he is looking forward to meeting up with the former Dundee United and Ross County stopper again but he has warned his team-mates they will be trying to score against the man he rates as the best keeper in the division over the last few seasons.

Letheren said: “I know Michael well. We were both on a personal training course last year in Glasgow which went very well.

“It wasn’t so much to do with pumping weights or anything like that.

“Instead, it was more to do with things like diet and nutrition and generally looking after the body. So it was a positive experience for both of us. We had a bit of banter on it too.

“Michael is a good lad and I would say he’s been the top keeper in this division for the past few years.

“That’s how highly I rate him and that’s the biggest compliment I can pay him.

“It will be good to catch up with him again this weekend but hopefully I can still put one over him.”

Falkirk are currently enjoying a fine run of form and are unbeaten in their last nine league games.

However, Dundee have won their last four matches away from Dens and Letheren admitted the Dark Blues are determined to continue that sequence of results and extend their lead at the top of the table.

The goalie said: “We couldn’t have asked for a tougher game than this.

“They are probably the form team in the league right now, having gone nine games unbeaten. We know what to expect and are under no illusions.

“They came to Dens Park the last time and got a very late draw. But I don’t think anyone could deny them a point because they played really well and we weren’t at our best.

“It’s one we’re looking forward to and after the disappointment of our match with Hamilton being postponed last Saturday, the lads are raring to go.

“We want to kick on and stay top of the league but to do so we know we have to be at our best in every game.”

The late call-off last weekend was a blessing in disguise as it allowed top striker Peter MacDonald to recover from a foot injury while new signing, former Hearts frontman Christian Nade, has had another week battling to regain full fitness after a long lay-off.

“Christian is looking good in training,” Letheren added.

“This extra week of hard work will hopefully make all the difference.

“Peter MacDonald is fine again after his foot injury so we’re going there in reasonable shape.”

Dundee will be without the injured Nicky Riley, Craig Beattie and Stephen O’Donnell.
