Jail for man who taunted gay friends with ‘Sodom and Gomorrah’ chant

A man who shouted “Sodom and Gomorrah” at two gay men in the street has been sent to prison for 10 months.

Perth Sheriff Court heard that Thomas Penman, 37, of Grampian Court, Perth, knew both males but there had been a “fall-out”.

Solicitor Billy Sommerville, defending, said his client had been friends with the pair but admitted “something happened” to sour the relationship.

“This led to my client shouting at them,” he said.

Penman pleaded guilty to a charge that on November 6 on Scott Street, Perth, he repeatedly shouted “Sodom and Gomorrah” at two men.

He also admitted breaking a bail condition on May 21 last year by contacting a woman when he was not supposed to.

Sentencing Penman, Sheriff Simon Collins told him: “I have read the background reports and it’s clear there is an element of non-compliance.

“In light of the circumstances there is no alternative to a custodial sentence.”
