A woman with serious head injuries was trapped in a car after a two-vehicle collision in Dundee.

The woman, thought to be aged around 60, had to be removed on a spinal board from the front passenger seat of a VW Golf by firefighters, assisted by paramedics from the trauma team.

She was taken to Ninewells Hospital by ambulance with head and possible spinal injuries.

Another casualty was taken to hospital with suspected neck injuries by ambulance crews, who also treated two people at the scene for less serious injuries.

The incident happened around 6.40pm on Thursday at the junction of Blinshall Street and Miln Street, in the Blackness industrial area, when the VW Golf was in collision with a white Audi.

Two appliances from Blackness Fire Station were quickly on the scene and firefighters and paramedics worked closely together to stabilise the woman and remove her safely from the car, while police secured the area.

Blue Watch manager Graeme Christie said: “Two people had been in each car and one person, a female, was trapped in the front passenger seat of the VW Golf.

“We stabilised the vehicle and the casualty and along with the ambulance crew we worked out the best way to remove the woman safely.

“There was concern for her condition and she was drifting in and out of consciousness. However, she was stable so it was a very controlled extrication, which took about 40 minutes.

“We used hydraulic cutting equipment to allow us access and to remove her from the car and got her into the ambulance which took her to Ninewells.”

The operation took around 45 minutes and police ensured traffic was kept moving around the area.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Ambulance Service said three ambulances and the trauma team had attended the incident.

“Two people were taken by ambulance to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, one with a head injury and one with a neck injury.

“Two other persons were treated by ambulance personnel at the scene.”

Traffic officers cordoned off Miln Street at the junctions of Blinshall Street and Brown Street.

The vehicles were removed and the road cleared around 9.15pm.
