Montrose boss knows importance of Berwick match

Paul Hegarty has called on his Montrose players to seize the opportunity of closing the gap on Berwick Rangers.

The Links Park manager knows that this afternoon could be a pivotal moment in their League Two campaign – in the Angus club’s history, infact.

Beat second bottom Berwick and the gap between them and safety is just two points. Lose, though, and it’s eight.

Hegarty admitted: “There will still be six games after this one, so you can’t say it is win or bust but there’s no doubt it will have a big bearing.

“We’re looking on it as an opportunity to claw Berwick back. It’s a vital game.

“The players showed me in the Arbroath match that they are capable of it. As well as the right attitude, they showed they could play nice football as well.

“We’ve spoken to them at length about the importance of this match.”

Hegarty is sure the Montrose fans will do their bit today – as they did in the Angus derby – but the players need to start the ball rolling, he insisted.

“The derby match was a great atmosphere,” he said.

“We’ve got to give our supporters something to cheer about by the way we go about things.”

Ross McCord is described as 50/50 as he is struggling to shake off a knock picked up in the defeat to Albion Rovers last week.
