Police rushed to an Angus beach after a worried member of the public reported seeing a skeleton on the sand.
However when officers arrived at Monifieth beach they found the “body” was a decomposing seal.
Officers received the call at around 4pm on Sunday.
A source told The Courier: “The control room got a call to report a skeleton on Monifieth beach.
“A member of the public called it in. He was concerned and wanted to make sure it wasn’t a body.
“A unit was sent out there to check and it turned out it was a seal skeleton.”
The incident is similar to one which happened near the town in April, when shocked residents of Broughty Ferry and Monifieth found a blood-stained body bag near Balmossie Bridge.
Police enquiries established that the bag contained a large, dead seal.
The animal had washed up on the beach and officers from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) had placed it into a bag ahead of a planned uplift.
