St Andrews councillor Brian Thomson has expressed his disappointment that the tattered saltire flag is still flying above St Andrews Town Hall.
Last week Fife Council promised to replace the scruffy saltire flag at St Andrews Town Hall. It came as former Fife councillor, and resident, Bill Sangster raised the issue of the shabby flag.
Mr Thomson said: “I’m very disappointed that the tattered saltire flag is still flying above the town hall, particularly as I was advised by a council officer on June 12 that it would be removed and replaced with a new flag.
“The flag had been purchased for £300 by the community council in September 2012, but the high winds through last winter have left it in its current state.
“The matter was raised with officers in early June and, with it being unreasonable to expect the community council to have to purchase a new flag twice a year, it was agreed that the council would purchase a replacement flag.
“Whilst I welcomed confirmation that the council was to replace the flag, it’s ridiculous that nearly eight weeks later, the tattered flag is still flying at the height of the tourist season.
“I have been advised that a new saltire flag has been purchased, however, the rope has become twisted around the top of the flagpole, meaning that the tattered flag cannot be removed safely without the use of a cherry picker.
“I have been assured that this work is to be arranged as a matter of urgency, and I have been further advised that the flagpole and flag are to be the subject of regular inspections in the future.”
