Early plans for Regional Performance Centre for Sport submitted to council

Two years after it was promised, Dundee’s long-awaited Regional Performance Centre for Sport has taken a step closer.

Plans for the £12 million facility have finally been submitted.

The application for outline planning permission is the first chance members of the public will get to have their say on the proposed development for Caird Park.

Unrivalled in Courier country, the Regional Performance Centre for Sport will provide a training venue for squads across a range of sports.

Dundee’s two football clubs, Dundee and Dundee United, have been involved in the development of the centre.

It will provide facilities to encourage development and participation in sport at a local level and provide an entry point for local young athletes and a pathway for their development and participation in performance sport.

It is proposed that the centre will be built in the area around the existing velodrome and athletics track between Oak Ward Wood and the A90 Kingsway and between Mains Loan and the A90 Forfar road.

Health Secretary Shona Robison said: “This new state-of-the-art sports centre will be a great asset for athletes but it will also provide some fantastic facilities for the local community in Dundee to help keep people active and energise the legacy of the Commonwealth Games.

“We all know how important regular exercise is, not only for our physical health it also makes a real difference to our mental wellbeing too.”

She added: “This project in Dundee represents a wonderful opportunity for the people of Dundee and the surrounding areas.”

List MSP Jenny Marra campaigned to get the sports investment for the city, and said: “I’m delighted that the Regional Performance Centre for sport is going to the planning stage.

“When we started the campaign to bring a performance centre to our city, the response was huge and Dundonians shouted loud and clear that they wanted a leading sports facility.

“The sports centre has the potential to bring people from far and wide into Dundee and to be a great facility for people across our city.”

A public consultation event will take place in Kirkton Community Centre on Tuesday at 6.30pm.
