One of the legends of Perth Racecourse will bow out today, marking the end of an era.
Although Sam Morshead will stay on as a consultant at the venue until the end of the year, today’s Glorious Finale meeting will be his last as general manager.
Mr Morshead, 60, is undergoing treatment for prostate cancer and is retiring after starting his career at Perth Racecourse in 1988. This followed a lengthy career as a jockey which saw him amass more than 400 winners.
He also took part in the Grand National and Cheltenham and Aintree festivals.
His dedication to horse racing saw him pick up Pride of Racing’s Outstanding Contribution to Racing Award in 2013.
Sam was in action on the mic on Wednesday as Autumn Ladies Day took place at Perth Racecourse. Organisers decided to roll out the event due to the popularity of Ladies Day, which was held in May.
Tracey Quin, business development manager at Perth Racecourse, said: “Our May Ladies Day event is one of the most popular in Scottish racing and we knew we could expand on this by bringing in a second event to round off the season.
“Things are a little cooler at this time of year so Best Dressed Lady and Best Dressed Gent will be awarded to the most stylish modern tweeds.”
Today’s Glorious Finale event will see Richard Farquhar walk the Perth Racecourse as part of his challenge that covers more than 2,000 miles connecting all UK racecourses.
He is raising money for Pancreatic Cancer UK and Racing Welfare.
