Murraygate in Dundee was busy with shoppers.

With Christmas Day already a fading memory, eager Courier Country shoppers hit local high streets in a bid to pick up a Boxing Day bargain.

In Dundee, shoppers packed the city centre. David Carson, centre manager at the Overgate, said: “Boxing Day sales have been extremely popular with Dundee shoppers who have been visiting in high numbers.

“The Next sale always draws a huge crowd, with visitors lining up from early this morning to be the first in when the doors opened at 6am.”

About 400 people queued outside Next at the Gallagher Retail Park in preparation for the store’s 6am opening.

In Angus, William Stephen, owner of video games outlet Backyard Games, said that both his stores in Brechin and Arbroath were busy.

Hobby store Battlefront Angus opened in Forfar two weeks ago and proprietor William Whyte said he could not have picked a better time to do so.

He said: “We weren’t sure how it was going to go today, but we had a few people in early doors and things are starting to pick up now.”

Shoppers in Fife braved cold temperatures and Kirkcaldy High Street was a bustling throng at lunchtime.

There was brisk business in Perth as thousands of shoppers made their way to retailers on the High Street.

Offers of major discounts, some up to 50%, brought people rushing to the tills, despite the pre-Christmas offers advertised by online retailers.

A select few High Street chains, such as Gap, were open from as early as 6am. As the day wore on, however, shoppers were out in force throughout the city centre, with clothing stores proving among the most popular.
