Dens Road Market has been left empty.

A Dundee institution has closed its doors after 44 years.

The last trader in the Dens Road Market left the historic building this week.

Marilyn Forbes said that she did not see hope for herbusiness there, moving instead to the busier Hilltown Indoor Market on Main Street.

“I just did not see a future at the Dens Road Market,” explained Marilyn.

“We had problems with the roof, especially leaks and other stuff like that. I was the last trader there other people left because of ill health and age. It just wasn’t working anymore,” she added.

It is unclear what will happen to thebuilding, which was once referred to as “Dundee’s Petticoat Lane” a reference to the famous market in the East End of London.

When it opened in 1969, there were more than 80 stalls and shops in the market, attracting customers from as far afield as Aberdeen. In 1971, the People’s Journal referred to it as a shopping “mecca.”

However, more recently the market fell on hard times, with owners MRK1 ltd going into administration late last year.

“I don’t know what will happen to it now. I think maybe it will be sold or pulled down and turned into houses,” said Marilyn.

“But I have no regrets about leaving it really is a new chapter for us.”
