Angus veterans opt out of First World War ‘celebration’
ByRichard Watt
Members of an Angus war veterans’ association have voted unanimously to opt out of remembrance events surrounding the First World War, fearing they could be seen as “celebrating” conflict.
Events are planned across the country to mark the start of the 1914-18 conflict.
But a Royal British Legion Scotland Montrose branch spokesman told The Courier its members found a four-year programme of events, announced by First Minister Alex Salmond last year, nothing to be “celebratory” about.
Members have discussed placing a small marker at their local cenotaph on August 4, but will now not take part in national or locally-planned events.
