A man has agreed to spend time on an environmental project after community justice won the day in East Haven.
There was an outpouring of anger and disgust on the Our Easthaven Facebook page after a traditional wooden picnic table was seared by hot coals on Sunday evening. Remnants of the ill-planned barbecue, including empty wrappers and containers, as well as half-eaten food, were strewn about the area.
Local walkers and cyclists helped to clear the rubbish the following day.
An appeal went out across social media and by word mouth to try to identify a group of four two men and two women who staged the night-time barbecue, before leaving in an older-style red BMW or Volkswagen Golf.
And amid comments from people who were furious and saddened by the mess, it reaped a near-immediate result.
One of the people responsible was identified through private messaging.
Within 24 hours of the appeal, Our Easthaven said: “The driver of the car has now stepped forward and apologised.
“He and a friend have agreed to come along to East Haven and work alongside residents on an environmental project in the near future.
“This will hopefully make the individuals concerned aware of the impact of their actions on both the environment and on local people who try to keep the area clean and pleasant for people to visit – thank you.”
