DNA helps net Arbroath pub robber

A man who left his DNA on the shattered glass of an Angus pub he robbed has been sent to jail.

Christopher Watt, 25, from Grant Road in Arbroath, appeared at the town’s sheriff court for sentencing on Tuesday after previously pleading guilty to stealing a cash register and alcohol from the Fisherman’s Inn in Arbroath on October 28.

The court heard how police matched DNA taken from blood found at the scene of the theft to that of Watt.

He was sentenced to six months, back dated to October 28, for the break-in, a further 30 days for shoplifting and an additional 60 days for possession of a knife.

Watt had previously admitted he forced open the cash register using a metal pole and left with £910.64 worth of bottles of alcohol and money.

Depute fiscal Hazel Anderson said: “Police found a piece of glass with blood on it at the scene. That was examined and the DNA of the accused was found.

“Police attended at the accused’s home address and recovered empty bottles and a cash register from his living room floor with blood on it.”

Watt’s defence agent told Sheriff Gregor Murray: “I realise that your first thought is imprisonment and he agrees that he may receive better treatment in prison.”

Sheriff Murray said: “Theft by break in is the type of offence which society hates and a custodial sentence is the only appropriate measure.”
