Former Angus councillor George Norrie, a champion boxer who went on to receive the MBE and freedom of the county, has died at the age of 86.
Mr Norrie enjoyed a 40-year career as an independent councillor in Montrose and was made a freeman of Angus shortly after his retiral in 2007.
Born in Banffshire and educated at Turriff school, his family moved south to Angus where, as a 14-year-old, he was taken on at Craigo Mill.
He then served as a second engineer in the merchant navy before joining Glaxo as a senior engineer.
A formidable boxer, he was the Midland District light heavyweight champion in the 1940s, and also represented Scotland.
He entered local politics in 1966 and he remained a champion of local interests over the following four decades.
Mr Norrie worked on a variety of county, district and Angus Council committees, as well as representing the authority on outside organisations including Tayside Fire Board and as a director of Montrose Links Trust and governor of Dorward House.
He was named Montrose Citizen of the Year in 1994 and the following year received his MBE from the Queen at Holyrood Palace. An active Rotarian for many years, in 1995 he was presented with Rotary International’s highest honour, the Paul Harris Fellowship.
Mr Norrie is survived by his wife Ethel, four nieces and a nephew.
His funeral takes place on Thursday at 11.30am at Montrose Congregational Church, then Sleepyhillock Cemetery.
