Four houses were evacuated in Grange Place in Monifieth after dangerous levels of gas were detected.
Homeowners had to spend Tuesday night with friends or family after the evacuation while gas engineers worked to repair the problem.
Hazel Whatley, whose house was worst hit, said she woke up on Tuesday to the smell of gas.
She said: “We had a boiler put in not too long ago so we were worried it could be that.
“We phoned the plumber who told us it wasn’t the boiler but suggested phoning a gas company.
“The company arrived within 10 minutes and evacuated the house.”
She continued: “They found a couple of leaks in the garden.”
Dennis Kerby from Scotland Gas Networks said that the leak had been repaired and that the cause of the problem was likely to be determined over the coming days.
He added that he expected residents to be able to return to their homes.
