Motorist found at wheel of car had failed to resit test after being banned 40 years ago

A Dundee man pulled over by police on the Tay Road Bridge had been banned from the road since 1974, a court heard.

Norman Evans was pulled over for an MOT offence, but officers discovered he was disqualified from driving more than 40 years ago.

The 1970s ban was in place until Evans sat a driving test, but the court heard that he never did and was banned again in 1997.

Katrina Clark, defending, said: “His position is that he was not aware he shouldn’t be driving.”

Sheriff Alastair Brown told Evans: “You have been driving a car throughout your life. Given the disqualification is 40 years old, I suppose you ignored it.

“In 1974 you were disqualified because one of my predecessors decided you were a menace to the public until you sat the test.

“I am not ruling out a prison sentence. Do not drive, do you understand?”

Evans, 66, of Pentland Avenue, admitted driving while disqualified on the Tay Road Bridge on July 16.

Sheriff Brown deferred sentence until December 1.
