For much of the season it has been the young players at Tannadice who have grabbed the headlines.
However, as Dundee United prepare to travel to Perth, there has been a reminder sent out from St Johnstone that they have a rising star who isn’t doing too badly himself.
Not long turned 21, Stevie May can still be put in the emerging talent category and he is being backed by team-mate Gwion Edwards to play a key role when the Tangerines visit McDiarmid Park.
Saints go into the game on the back of a 1-0 home defeat to Celtic on Boxing Day, but hidden by the scoreline was an encouraging second-half performance that meant the Hoops were relieved to escape with all three points.
May was in the thick of it, and was even denied what looked to be a penalty, so it is no surprise Edwards is tipping him to trouble United.
“Stevie has shown this season that he is an outstanding player,” said Edwards.
“He is getting goals almost every week but he has not been getting quite the level of praise the Dundee United players have received. However, I would say he is on the same level and he deserves to be bracketed with them.”
He continued: “He is a natural goalscorer who works hard on his game, even outside of training. There is no doubt that he has the ability to go to the top.
“Whether he is still here after the January transfer window I am not sure, but if he keeps scoring goals clubs will come knocking because everyone wants a scorer.
“And, having played there myself, I would say Stevie definitely has the ability to succeed down south.”
Edwards stressed the importance of accentuating the positive from the Celtic match.
“It was a good performance from the team and we were disappointed not to get anything from the game,” he said.
“We can take heart from how we played in the second half into our next game against United and hopefully we can get back to winning ways.
“Hopefully, we can get a positive result because our workrate was brilliant in the second half.”
Skipper Dave Mackay is a doubt after picking up a calf knock against Celtic, while striker Rory Fallon returns to the squad following a two-game suspension.
