Repairing damage at Brechin Cathedral will cost almost £40,000, it has emerged.
The “shocking” bill for a new roof in the cathedral hall will force officials to dip into special savings. Session clerk Douglas Taylor said the cash was “a big whack” out of cathedral coffers.
“We had a Kirk Session meeting and got the go-ahead to repair the hall roof at a cost of £30,000 plus VAT,” he said.
“In total, with painting and decorating, we’re looking at about £38,000. We’re going back to the original state of the roof. The whole roof will be taken down and repaired.”
The hall has been out of use since a large chunk of ceiling plaster crashed to the floor last month.
The need for work on the hall comes while a major project to repair dry rot in the cathedral itself is still to be finished. Those efforts began in 2010 and are only just nearing completion.
The loss of the hall also posed problems for the community groups that normally meet there.
“We hope groups will be back in the hall for the first week in February,” added Mr Taylor.
