Councillors welcome £1.5 million Perth car park revamp plan

The car park on Canal Street is to be upgraded.

The closure of parts of a major Perth car park during a £1.5 million upgrade are “inevitable”, a committee has heard.

The multi-storey at Canal Street is to get a revamp after plans were approved by Perth and Kinross Council’s enterprise and infrastructure committee.

However, councillors were warned that there would need to be a reduction in the number of available spaces at times to allow work to be carried out.

A council officer said: “In reality, we would be looking to minimise any loss of parking but the scale of refurbishment we are looking at, it’s inevitable that a floor may need to be taken out of use. We will try to minimise that.”

The upgrade would see walls and columns painted to stop decolourisation from exhaust fumes and result in upgraded signage and road markings. Parking for motorcycles will be improved, along with better access for Shopmobility vehicles.

New wheel stops will be fitted to parking bays, stairs will be resurfaced and lighting renewed.

The modernisation will also include upgrading fire alarm and detection systems, ventilation, heating, water and lighting, as well as a pay-on-foot system similar to the one at the South Inch.

Councillor Alan Livingstone said: “All the changes are very, very worth it. The downside is, it’s taken so long to come to this. On behalf of my wife, I would like to thank planners for wider bays and a wider turning circles.”
