A Dundee social club left devastated by recent flooding will need to be gutted due to damage caused by contaminated water.

Fairfield Sports and Social Club have been told that they are fully insured but are waiting for confirmation of when the clean-up operation can begin.

The club has received “hundreds and hundreds of messages of support” from members, the local community and politicians.

Club trustee Jim Sorrie, 54, said: “People have really come to our aid and reminded us that this is what a social club is all about.

“We have about 2,500 members in the community hub with the clubs, teams, coaches and volunteers and so many have got in touch to offer their help and support.

“The insurance company is busy costing it all up at the moment. It is great to hear that we’re fully covered but we want to get started as soon as possible.

“We haven’t yet got a clue when we could be open again. The only thing we might be able to save are the metal tables but the place needs gutting.

“It was a terrible feeling at the time and it laid us all out for a while but we want to get it fixed now.”

East End councillor Christina Roberts has arranged for a skip to be delivered to the club this week so they can begin the clear-up.

Many club members hail from her constituency and she hopes this first step will help it to get back on its feet quickly.

Ms Roberts said: “It was horrendous for everybody and I’m doing what I can to help them.

“It’s coming back from something like this that’s hardest.”
