Saints striker suffered on Saturday night after penalty miss

There will be no lack of St Johnstone players ready to put their hand up for taking penalties, according to the man who has given up the role.

Steven MacLean suffered a miserable Saturday night after missing his second spot-kick in recent weeks.

And he agrees with his manager that the time is right to let somebody else shoulder the responsibility.

“I’m off them,” MacLean confirmed. “I’ll step aside and let somebody else take them.

“It’s one of those things, isn’t it.

“I’ve scored a fair few over my career. I’d made up my mind to go to the keeper’s right but obviously it went a bit too high.

“Obviously it was disappointing and, I’m not going to lie, I didn’t have a great Saturday night.

“But it happens in football and it’s about how you bounce back from disappointments. I’ve got to move on from it.

“There will be plenty of boys who will want to step up to take the next one.”

Despite his personal disappointment and the frustration that the team didn’t get all three points against Hearts, MacLean was keen to accentuate the positives.

“We had enough chances to win the game,” he said. “I thought we played really well in the conditions.

“Sometimes it’s difficult playing against 10 men but we moved the ball well and create a few chances.

“It was just one of those days.

“Muzza had a couple, Kano had a shot well saved by their keeper, the same for Mikey, and I had one that went just past the post.

“As a team we have to look at it and think that it would have been more disappointing if we hadn’t created those chances.

“In the past teams have sat in against us and we’ve struggled to break them down.

“But we’ve shown that isn’t the case this season.

“We’ve got two winnable away games coming up. Both Partick and Motherwell have picked up and they’ll be hard matches but we’ll go into them with confidence.”

He added: “There’s nothing in the league that scares us.

“Beating Aberdeen 5-1 even though they weren’t in great form at the time shows what we can do.

“Even last week against Celtic we should have been ahead at half-time.

“If we’re on form we can give anybody a game. We know there’s a really good opportunity to do well in the league.”
