An Angus man who tried to trip up a police officer by kicking his leg has admitted acting like a “drunken idiot”.
Christopher Cannon,26, of River Street Brechin, appeared at Arbroath Sheriff Court where he accepted a charge of assaulting a police officer in Montrose on April 28.
Fiscal Jill Drummond told the court that Cannon and his friends had been out in Montrose and were “talking up” to two police officers walking on George Street.
She said: “The accused went behind the constable and deliberately kicked his right leg in an attempt to trip him up.
“The officer was able to keep his balance and the accused was restrained and cautioned. He immediately said sorry and that he was ‘being a drunken idiot’.”
Cannon’s defence solicitor Nick Markowski echoed those sentiments to Sheriff Robert Vaughan and said his client was “playing to the gallery” but had apologised to the officer and the court.
Sheriff Vaughan sentenced Cannon to a six-month community payback order with 75 hours of unpaid work.
