A popular garden attraction saved from closure last year has been hit twice in a week by thieves.
Around £500 in cash was stolen from St Andrews Botanic Garden after it closed on Sunday March 29. On Easter Monday staff found the gatehouse had been broken into but nothing taken.
Police have launched inquiries into both incidents and appealed for information from the public.
The Canongate garden, owned by St Andrews University, is run by a charitable trust that took over the lease from cash-strapped Fife Council last year.
Garden education officer Nikki Macdonald said the incidents shocked staff and volunteers.
As well as the loss of cash, some of which was a collection for the Learning Den project, she said repairs and lock changes were costly matters.
She said: “We are operating on a shoestring and things like this can tip the balance.
