VIDEO: Blairgowrie heads online to declare itself open to Christmas shoppers

A group of Perthshire businesses have taken to the internet in an effort to promote their town after trade was decimated by nearby roadworks.

Shops in Blairgowrie and Rattray lost out on hundreds of pounds due to the chaos caused by two sets of works, in the Wellmeadow and across the bridge in Rattray, which only ended last week.

In a bid to attract customers back to the town centre, many have donned Santa hats to belt out a festive tune to promote local traders.

More than 30 businesses took part in the video, which features them singing sections of We Wish You a Merry Christmas and it was filmed and edited in just a few days before being posted online on Sunday.

The various segments were filmed by businessman Steve Johnson, who runs Graphite Web Solutions and he enlisted Stefan Morrocco, of Morrocco Media, to edit the video.

Steve said businesses had been suffering due to the roadworks taking place so close to Christmas.

“Local businesses have been affected quite badly,” he said. “Both sets of roadworks were delayed. They should have been done by the middle of November but they only finished last week and the town centre was gridlocked.

“A lot of customers weren’t coming into town because the traffic was horrendous.

“A lot of businesses say they have been struggling their takings are down. The lead-up to Christmas is the busiest time of year and I think there was a few saying they might not be here in January if it continued.”

Local councillors appealed to Perth and Kinross Council and a grant of £2,000 was made to help businesses promote the town and increase footfall, with a portion of the cash being used to make the video.

Steve said although he was behind the camera, he also had to sing to inspire the video subjects.
