Menzieshill High School closure: education chief issues teacher job assurance

Dundee City Council says no teacher will lose their job in the Menzieshill High closure.

It comes after news that the Scottish Government has decided not to ‘call in’ the council’s decision to close Menzieshill and move pupils to the new Harris Academy.

Education convener Stewart Hunter said: “Now the decision has been taken, we can concentrate on our proposals and plans to help the two schools integrate.

“The head teachers of the two schools will get together and discuss the way forward.

“They are keen to help pupils integrate as much as possible in the year ahead before the move into the new Harris building.

“This will not only be a new school for Menzieshill pupils and teachers, it will also be a new building for Harris Academy pupils and teachers.”

Mr Hunter also wanted to reassure Menzieshill staff that they would be helped through the transition and that everything possible will be done to make the closure of Menzieshill High School and the subsequent move for pupils to Harris Academy as easy as possible.

He said the council already had ideas about what it should do, but no plans were able to be implemented until it knew the final decision of the Government.

Mr Hunter said: “We can now get on with preparations to make the transition for pupils and staff as straightforward as we can.

“Most of the teachers will be moving to Harris, and those that are not will be redeployed elsewhere in the city.

“No one is going to lose their job.

“We also intend that the two pupil councils and the two parent councils begin to integrate and work alongside each other in the coming year.

“We are very aware that people from Menzieshill are concerned that their identity will be lost. We want to do everything we can to ensure that is not the case.”

The next step is making transport arrangements for pupils going to Harris.
