Three teenagers broke into a flat and spray painted abusive messages on its walls, Forfar Sheriff Court heard.
The three youths, all from Brechin, also stole food and a PlayStation games console from a flat in the town.
Liam Carson, 17, of St Ninians Place, Dylan Robert Fergusson, 16, of Church Street and Kieron Stibbles, 19, of Montrose Street, admitted carrying out the offences on October 1 last year.
Deputy fiscal Hazel Anderson said the messages included: “We will kill you.”
Bob Bruce, representing Carson, said his client was “full of contrition”.
Sheriff Kevin Veal placed Carson on a high tariff structured deferred sentence until March 27 and warned him to save money as there would “almost certainly be a compensation aspect to any penalty imposed”.
Representing Stibbles, defence agent Nick Markowski said his client “got carried away” and that he was no longer “mixing in the same crowd”.
Sheriff Veal imposed a community payback order of 120 hours of unpaid work and £250 compensation on Stibbles. Fergusson will be sentenced next Thursday.
