Daring dookers are being encouraged to pledge their early support for a New Year Angus dip.
Traditional events in both Arbroath and Carnoustie have been growing in popularity and are now firmly established as a fun start to the year for both participants and spectators.
The dooks are also a growing source of support for charity and Arbroath event organiser Alana Loudon is hopeful of a flood of hardy souls willing to dip a little more than a toe in the North Sea.
Monies from the Arbroath event go to Cancer Research UK and as part of their £5 entry fee, all participants will get a dook T-shirt.
The event is scheduled to take place at noon on January 1 at the town lifeboat station.
“We will have entry forms on the day, but are encouraging people to sign up in advance.
“It’s a really great event and we hope that we’ll get even more coming along this year to take part and cheer the dookers on,” said Alana.
Entry/sponsor forms are available from Alana by email at alanaloudon@hotmail.co.uk or on 07881940418.
A couple of hours later, and a hop along the Angus coast, Carnoustie Rugby Club will continue the dip tradition started in 1995 by two of its players.
Sponsorship and a collection on the day raises money for local charities and the start of the event is signalled with the kicking of a rugby ball into the sea. The first swimmer to gather up the ball is the recipient of the dook trophy.
Carnoustie’s dook gets under way at 2pm, with each participant also receiving a T-shirt and entry is £10 per person. Entry forms and details are on the club website and available at the Rugby Clubhouse, Links Parade, or Visions, Carnoustie.
