When you go down to the Enchanted Forest…

One of the spectacular scenes at the Enchanted Forest.
One of the spectacular scenes at the Enchanted Forest.

For one month every autumn the night forest around Pitlochry comes to life with sound and light.

The Enchanted Forest is largely aimed at families and the majority of people there when I visited were parents with children.

I didn’t let being 37-years old stop me from enjoying the wonder of the seasonal light show though. It really is spectacular.

For those who haven’t been before, a coach takes people from the centre of Pitlochry on the five-minute drive to Faskally Wood and the Enchanted Forest.

The experience takes you on a night time woodland walk around a small loch. Multi-coloured lighting illuminates the path and the trees around you.

There are a variety of set pieces where you can stop to watch as light and sound combine in a quite magical display. The culmination sees powerful search lights beam into the sky as an acrobat performs feats of derring-do on a high wire above the water. A soaring orchestral score accompanies the action.

There is a storytelling tent for children and mulled wine or hot chocolate to keep you warm as you go round.

Last year 46,000 people attended during the show’s month-long run. This year’s Enchanted Forest saw visitor numbers go through the roof, breaking the 62,000 barrier.

I’m not surprised: it’s quite wonderful. The only question is: can they make the 2016 show even better?
