A 66-year-old Angus man tried to glass a female police officer after his neighbour’s death, a court heard.
Ian Cameron, from Arbroath, swung for the officer who was responding to a call-out on February 3.
The first offender appeared at Forfar Sheriff Court and admitted assaulting PC Jennifer Jones at his Fergus Square home.
Depute fiscal Jill Drummond told the court: “At around 7.50pm on Tuesday February 3, police were in contacted in relation to a disturbance at the locus.
“Police traced the accused along with another in the living room, and both were heavily under the influence of alcohol.”
The pair were questioned about the disturbance. Ms Drummond added: “He picked up a whisky glass and attempted to strike Constable Jones on the head with it she caught his arm.”
Defending Cameron, solicitor Bob Bruce said: “His next-door neighbour had died and the brother, who was up from Eastbourne, came into the house and he had brought a bottle of whisky with him.
“He doesn’t usually drink, as he has health issues.”
Mr Bruce said another member of the deceased man’s family had arrived at the house and an argument had broken out between the two visitors, which caused police to attend.
He added: “That’s why he was so indignant; he did nothing wrong.”
The court head Cameron suffers from COPD and is to undergo treatment for leukaemia.
Deferring sentence to May 5, visiting Sheriff Christopher Shead said: “There are health circumstances which must be considered.”
