A celebration was held at Gayfield to mark the 130th anniversary of the most famous day in Arbroath FC’s history.
Former Scotland international Murdo MacLeod hosted a gala dinner in a marquee set up on the pitch to mark the club’s world record 36-0 defeat of Bon Accord in 1885.
Although the scoreline was equalled in June by FC Infonet Tallinn’s defeat of Virtsu Jalgpalliklubi in an Estonian cup tie, it has never been beaten in association football.
Around 300 guests were in attendance for the landmark occasion, including BT Sport presenter Tom Watt who was best known for playing Lofty in Eastenders.
The night also launched the club’s hall of fame with John Edward “Ned” Doig, Albert Henderson and Tom Cargill named as its first inductees.
Television personality and columnist Lorraine Kelly donated one of her red carpet gowns to a trove of high-value items that were up for auction and raffle.
Attendees bid on items including bottle number 36 of Arbikie Highland Estate’s special range of 36-0 vodka and gin, and one of 36 engraved Caithness Glass bowls.
Arbroath defeated Aberdeen club Bon Accord 36-0 in the Scottish Cup on September 12 1885.
Referee Dave Stormont later claimed that had he taken a harder line with the Aberdeen Bon Accord team, Arbroath could have won 430.
John Petrie, 18, scored 13 goals, still the record for most goals scored in a senior fixture, although it was equalled by Archie Thompson when Australia beat American Samoa 310 in 2001 in a World Cup qualifier.
The hapless Bon Accord goalkeeper on the day was Andrew Lornie, who normally played up front but went in goal when the regular keeper did not turn up.
The Lichties played 42 games that season, winning 26 and losing 11. They scored 178 goals and conceded 81.
