Olympic track and hurdles athlete Eilidh Child joined Fife youngsters in a cross-country event in Falkland Woods.

She was the inspirational celebrity guest at the Active Schools event, which saw 250 P4 to P7 children from nine Cupar and St Andrews primary schools take part in races.

Eilidh competed in the World Championships in Moscow and showed off her medals to the awe-struck children. She also gave a motivational talk about her career and took time to sign autographs.

Lynne MacKenzie, Active Schools coordinator, said: “She is from Kinross and grew up there, so she is a local role model the children can relate to.

“It shows them anything is possible if they try hard. With the Commonwealth Games coming up, we want to give kids a buzz about running.”

There were three different races, P5 to P7 boys’ race and a girls’ race, as well as a fun race for P4s. The races were the second of five running events to be held this academic year, with the next taking place early next year.
