Brave Cupar girl Summer Wroniecki received a magical surprise when Princess Elsa from Disney’s smash hit Frozen dropped in to say hello.
The six-year-old was admitted to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh after being injured at Cupar Children’s Gala on Saturday.
The youngster who recently battled cancer and fronted a high-profile fundraising campaign was one of those hurt when a giant inflatable slide broke loose in high winds and wreaked havoc at the gala in Duffus Park.
On the eve of an operation to repair a broken femur, the P2 pupil at Castlehill Primary School was all smiles when Elsa visited her hospital bedside.
The Disney star also brought joy to other children at the hospital.
Summer’s father Chris confirmed that his own little star came out of surgery on Tuesday and the consultant said the operation went “really well”.
Chris added: “Onwards and upwards now.”
Friends from the Cupar area and beyond took to Facebook to wish Summer and the family well. Ashley Page Duncan said: “Great news guys. She’s a wee star.”
Alison Laing said: “She’s certainly a tough wee cookie.”
Vikki White said: “She’s such a wee soldier. Big hugs to you all.”
Two people were taken to hospital and others were treated at the scene after high winds blew away the giant inflatable slide that had, until seconds earlier, been used by several other children.
Summer was knocked into a neighbouring funfair ride by the somersaulting inflatable. She received medical attention at the scene before being transferred to hospital.
It was a particularly cruel twist of fate since hundreds of families were due to return to Duffus Park on Sunday for “Summer’s Wee Walk”, which was to help raise funds for TCCL Lodge a St Andrews holiday house for children with cancer and their families and Cupar’s Castlehill Primary School.
It is hoped this event can be rearranged for a date when Summer can be part of it.
Fife Council environmental health officers are continuing their investigation into the incident.
Cupar Children’s Gala said every safety precaution was risk-assessed and fulfilled by the committee and service providers and blamed adverse weather conditions which were “outwith our control”.
In an updated statement on Facebook, the gala organisers said: “We can confirm that the investigation regarding the incident is ongoing and may take some time.
“Currently we are unable to offer any further comments on the matter. Our thoughts are with everyone involved. “
