A single mum from Dundee has fled Syria with her three sons after winning a legal battle with her ex-husband.
The Syrian father of Jannah Reid’s two youngest boys had refused to give her the go ahead to take them out of the conflict zone.
But last week the former High School of Dundee pupil was granted a divorce and, after a second court battle in a week, she secured exit visas for Ridwaan, 11, and Hashem, 10.
Jannah, 51, has now left Syria for Egypt and settled in a suburb of Cairo known as 6th October City. The Muslim convert celebrated the Islamic festival of Eid al-Adha in her new home this week.
She told The Courier: “Our Eid is peaceful and extremely quiet for the first time in over two years as we are now out of Syria at last.
“I spent the whole of the first day sleeping. No more stress. 6th October City is almost too quiet.”
Jannah converted to Islam while living in London, later joining fundamentalist sect, the Salafee, and marrying a Syrian adherent she met just three hours before the ceremony.
They relocated to Damascus in 2003 with her son from her first marriage but the city became a battleground between forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad and those opposed to his rule after an uprising two years ago.
When the conflict began, Jannah’s husband walked out and went to Saudi Arabia but she was prevented from taking her children out of the country without his written permission.
