An Aberdeen man threatened to fight police after missing his train home from Montrose on Hogmanay, Arbroath Sheriff Court has heard.
Stephen Robert Greig, 47, of Miltonfold, admitted that on January 2 in Hume Street, Montrose, he behaved in a manner likely to cause fear or alarm by shouting and swearing and refusing to desist when asked to do so by police officers.
He also admitted raising his fists to the two officers in a threatening manner, threatening them with violence and challenging them to a fight, while on bail.
Depute fiscal Jill Drummond said Greig refused to give his details when approached by police officers shortly after midnight.
“He then raised his fists and said he could knock out both the officers in two seconds,” she said.
“He then continued to shout at passers-by before being arrested.”
Defence agent Angela McLardy said Greig had been visiting his girlfriend in Montrose on Hogmanay but missed his train back to Aberdeen after his girlfriend had left to see friends.
“He spent Hogmanay in a hotel in Montrose but then found there were no trains or buses running on New Year’s Day, despite him waiting for several hours,” she said. “There was no answer at the town’s police station and he was very cold. He had been drinking and offers no excuses.”
Sheriff Gregor Murray sentenced Greig to 70 hours of unpaid work.
