Cars will continue to be banned from Kirkcaldy High Street after councillors hailed a six-month trial as a “success story”.
In May Kirkcaldy Area Committee approved a trial restricting any vehicle from entering the pedestrianised area of the town centre.
The move sought to alleviate concerns from residents and businesses over the number of vehicles entering the zone outwith permitted hours.
The six month trial began in July and has been monitored throughout to assess its effectiveness.
Transportation service manager Dave Frew told the committee that the trial should continue after feedback from those involved was universally positive.
He said: “This successful trial has shown that, with the simple deployment of signs, the pedestrianised zone has remained virtually traffic free during the restricted times.
“The police and Kirkcaldy4All have also voiced their support for the continued use of signing.
“Businesses operating in the pedestrianised zone have not reported any issues arising from the trial.”
With the exception of Tuesdays and Sundays, the signs will be in place every day from noon to 5pm.
Barriers are also to be placed at Tolbooth Street after Mr Frew noted that there had been issues with vehicles using the road to access High Street.
Committee chairman Neil Crooks said: “It has been a success story and we are going to make it a permanent feature now.”
