Broughty Ferry commuters could enjoy quicker journeys to work after it was revealed high-speed trains may soon stop at the station.
It’s understood Dutch rail operator Abellio which takes over ScotRail services from April will put provisions in place to cater for faster trains.
Proposals are understood to be at an early stage and it is unknown where the new trains will take passengers from Broughty Ferry.
For the new services to be put in place, the platforms may need to be raised to an appropriate height, particularly the south platform.
Initial plans suggest plastic steps would run the whole way along the platforms, costing a little over £60,000 to install.
George Ferguson, chairman of Broughty Ferry Community Council, has seen correspondence between Network Rail and the new franchise about the plans.
Welcoming the proposals, he said: “If the new ScotRail operator is planning to have more trains come to Broughty Ferry this is great news and shows that there must be enough of an appeal here to attract this.
“It’s good that the new franchise want to have high-speed trains stop in Broughty Ferry and what will happen with the platforms’ height will depend on what they do next.
“At the moment, I don’t know where the services will go to, but anything that brings people to Broughty Ferry has to be a good thing.”
A Network Rail spokesman said: “We are currently reviewing possible solutions to improve the stepping distance between train and platform at Broughty Ferry station.”
