Stirling Albion 1 East Fife 0: Doris stunner dumps Fife out of Scottish Cup
ByThe Courier Reporter
It was a familiar tale for East Fife as they were turfed out of the Scottish Cup last night at Forthbank last night.
At the weekend the Fifers had totally dominated their opponents Annan but had been unable to find the net.
And in last night’s second round replay with Stirling Albion it was like history repeating as Gary Naysmith’s men couldn’t cancel out former Arbroath and Dundee striker Steven Doris’s solitary first half goal.
East Fife went with Nathan Austin on his own up front and looked to pack the midfield. It was a ploy that seemed to be working with the Methil men controlling the early stages in the middle of the park.
But against the run of play Stirling scored an opener fit to grace any cup tie.
A foul on Sandy Cunningham saw the Fifers give away a free-kick on the edge of their own box and Doris punished them by slamming a stunning direct effort past Ryan Goodfellow.
At the other end Fraser Mullen tried to replicate Doris’s effort from the same distance but his striker failed to trouble Binos keeper Chris Smith.
Austin then missed from four yards out while Goodfellow tipped over a 25-yard effort from Albion’s Sean Dickson.
