‘I’m so thrilled’ Gran reunited with uncle’s army kit after Facebook appeal went worldwide

A Dundee grandmother has been reunited with a relative’s long-lost possessions after an internet appeal for information about a mystery photograph.

As we reported, Dundee musician Alan Davidson hoped to track down the descendants of Lochee airman David Martin after finding a 95-year-old photo hidden in a shaving kit.

When Margaret Milne’s niece showed her the photo she immediately recognised her Uncle David and now the “thrilled” 74-year-old has been presented with the picture and her relative’s RAF discharge papers.

Margaret said: “Alan put it on Facebook and I never noticed it but my niece saw it and said she thought it was him.

“I looked at it and said ‘That’s Uncle David’. I call him my uncle but he’s actually my mother’s cousin.

“When I was a wee girl he used to take me about. I remember him well.

“He lived in the Seagate. When he died we helped empty the house so I’ve no idea how this came about.

“It’s just the strangest thing imaginable. I’m so thrilled.”

Alan, who performs as the Pianoman, shared the photograph on social media sites including Old Dundee’s Facebook page.

The picture shows RAF personnel including David Martin outside a hut dubbed the Airman’s Nest.

The certificate Alan found with the photo reveals Mr Martin was born in 1901 and lived on Balgay Street in Lochee.

Dating from 1920, the certificate said he served with the RAF in South Africa.

Alan said: “I’ve been buying and selling for a hobby almost all of my adult life so I can’t remember exactly when and where I got it. It could have been at a car boot sale or charity shop.

“I’m guessing the kit is army issue and David has put it all together somehow.

“It’s lovely and if there’s a little bit of intrigue it makes it even more interesting. I was surprised how many people shared it it went round all the Commonwealth countries in the world.

“The Dundee Law Society sent it to New Zealand and Australia, so it got legs very quickly.

“I’m really glad that it’s got back to Margaret.”
