A 22-year-old man was jailed after being removed from the dock at Arbroath Sheriff Court.
James Paton, Warddykes Road, Arbroath, was held in contempt of court by Sheriff Peter Paterson after being deemed unfit to appear when his case called on Tuesday.
He was held in the building until 2pm when he was allowed back into court.
Paton admitted driving with excess alcohol in Noran Avenue, Arbroath, on January 26.
He further admitted driving without a licence or insurance and resisting arrest on the same date.
Paton also admitted smashing a window of a police car and scratching a word into the cell wall at Arbroath Police Station.
Sheriff Paterson said: “I will not tolerate people coming to court under the influence of substances.”
Paton was remanded for three weeks.
