A Japanese artist has found a new source of inspiration while exhibiting in Scotland black pudding.
Hideyuki Katsumata has transformed Dundee Contemporary Arts’ galleries into a riot of colour with his outsized cartoons.
His exhibition, USO de HOUNTOU (“that’s also unreal but it’s also real”) is his biggest exhibition and first in the UK.
Katsumata’s work depicts robots, UFOs, dragons and bodies with multiple limbs or eyes in a way that echoes both Japanese culture and Dundee’s comic and video games heritage.
He has been in Dundee all week preparing the exhibition, which opens on Saturday, and said he is delighted to be in the country.
He has also been impressed with the quality of his breakfasts showing off pictures on his Facebook page, where he pays tribute to both fry-ups and Scottish beer.
“My inspiration is myself,” he said. “Every time I make up a story or a fantasy I make up characters and then draw them.
“It’s great to be in Scotland there is good food, good whisky and black pudding!”
Katsumata has made music videos and illustrated record sleeves for such artists as CUZ, formed by Sam Dook from The Go! Team and Mike Watt from The Minutemen.
